Christmas With A Difference

Christmas, 2009

We live in a big world, a world with big problems. But at Christmas we are reminded of this truth – one person, no matter how small, can still make a big difference.

Have you ever read or seen the Dr. Seuss' story "Horton Hears A Who"? The book tells the story of Horton the Elephant who hears a small speck of dust talking to him. It turns out the speck of dust is actually a tiny planet, home to a city called "Who-ville," inhabited by microscopic-sized inhabitants known as "Whos." The "Whos" ask Horton (who, though he cannot see them, is able to hear them quite well) to protect them from harm, which Horton happily agrees to do, because "even though you can't see or hear them at all, a person's a person, no matter how small."

In "Horton Hears A Who" Dr. Seuss illustrates how one person's voice, one person's life, and one person's decision is able to make a significant difference in the lives of countless others. And doesn't Christmas teach us the same thing? God hears and responds to the prayers of even one person, no matter how small. God uses the life of one person, no matter how seemingly insignificant and no matter how very small – a tiny baby born in a stable – to change the lives and destinies of millions of needy people.

And just as God used people like the elderly widow Anna and the oddball John the Baptist and the little baby Jesus to make a lasting difference, so God can use you. Your prayers can make a difference; your decisions can make a difference; your life can make a difference. Join us at Cornerstone as we celebrate "Christmas with a difference!"
