A Smallville Christmas
Smallville, so the legend goes, is the home of the young Clark Kent, the small Kansas town where Clark discovers and develops the abilities he will later employ for the good of the world as “Superman.” For the last eight seasons the TV show Smallville has allowed us to take a good, long look at Superman before he put on his cape. We’ve seen him struggle, and even bleed, as he gradually embraces his destiny as the “Man of Steel.” In the Superman movies we see the invincible superhero; in Smallville we see the vulnerable person underneath the cape.
For thousands of years mankind mostly saw the invincibility of God – his power, his sovereignty, his holiness, his “otherworldliness.” And then came Christmas, when the God whose powers know no limit took off his cape, became one of us, and was born in a first century Smallville known as Bethlehem. Speaking of Jesus, John’s Gospel says it like this: “No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father’s side, has made him known.” (John 1:18) Christmas is when God came to earth – to “Smallville” – to make himself known, to show us, if you will, what he’s like underneath the cape. In this series we’re going to discover who God really is – his personality, his passions and his priorities. Join us at Cornerstone for “a Smallville Christmas” and discover for yourself the whole truth about our super God!
